Ans – Velu stood on the platform but he felt " as if he was still on a moving train" because Velu was tired, hungry and afraid of the ticket examiner on a train. He laid down near the compartment door. He could not get over the feeling that his train journey was over.
Q2. What made him feel miserable?
Ans – Velu was alone, tired and hungry. He did not have a ticket also. so he felt miserable.
Q3.(i) Velu travelled without a ticket. Why?
Ans – Velu travelled without a ticket because he did not have money.
(ii) How did he escape the ticket collector’s attention?
Ans – The ticket collector did not come to that unreserved compartment of the train in which Velu was travelling.

Ans – Velu had run away from his home because his father was beating him and snatch Velu's and his sister's money and spend it on drink.
Q5. Why did he decide to follow the ‘strange’ girl?
Ans – He was new in the city. He had no idea where to go and what to do there. Therefore he decided to follow the strange girl.

Ans – Velu can read Tamil but he can not read English because the could not read signboards that are in English. But he read the Tamil signboard of the central jail.

(i) What is she referring to?
Ans – She is referring to central jail.
Ans – When she said "If you are not careful..." to Velu, she meant that he should not do something wrong and get caught by the policemen. She told him to stay away from jail to avoid being caught by police.
Q3. (i) Where did the girl lead Velu to?
Ans – The girl lead Velu to a marriage hall.
(ii) What did they get to eat?
Ans – They got some food from the garbage bin. It was leftover food like banana, vada etc.

Ans – She was a ragpicker. She collects rubbish.

Ans – The strange hurts are made out of metal sheets, tyres, bricks, wood , plastic etc.
(ii) Why does Velu find them strange?
Ans – Velu finds them strange because he had never seen that type of huts. IN his own village the huts are made out of mud and palm leaves.
Q2. What sort of things did Jaya and children like her collect and what did they do with those things?
Ans – Jiya and children like her collected only paper, plastic glasses such things. And sell it to Jam bazaar's Jaggu.
Q3. Is Velu happy or unhappy to find work? Give a reason for your answer.
Ans – No, Velu is not happy to find the work. Because he had never done such kind of dirty work in his village.

Q1. Is Velu a smart boy? Which instances in the text show that he is or isn’t?
Ans – Yes, Velu is certainly a smart boy. In the beginning, he was reluctant to talk to a strange girl, this is very smart as one should avoid talking freely with a strange. He later realized that following that girl is a chance for him of survival and he takes it.
Q2. Do you think Jaya is a brave and sensitive child with a sense of humour? Find instances of her courage, kind nature and humour in the text.
Ans – I think Jaya is a brave girl as she was able to take care of herself without any elder. This takes a big deal of courage. Jaya is also a sensitive child as she understood the condition of Velu and offered him help.
Q3. What one throws away as waste may be valuable to others. Do you find this sentence meaningful in the context of this story. How?
Ans – Yes, this story shows that what we throw away as waste may be valuable for others. The empty bottles, paper and items of plastic are thrown out by the people. The rag pickers earn their living by collecting them. Those who stock up rubbish become very rich people for them. The waste is precious and a blessing for them and their life is based upon it.
